Kurawaka
Kurawaka
Mixed media on pine round
600mm diameter
by Julia Kihi-Coates
This piece was inspired by the “Mā te wahine ka ora! Mā te wahine ka mate!” prints of Hineahuone, Hinetītama and Hinenuitepō. The deep red and dark earthy maroon colours reflect the rich, red soils of Papatūānuku’s pubis and the blood that flows from within as a sign of life and death. The black represents the pure untainted potential of new life and also the deep warm darkness of Rarohenga that we meet upon death.
