Te Hā o Tāne

Mixed media on mdf board

300mm x 1200mm

by Julia Kihi-Coates

This piece was inspired by the “Mā te wahine ka ora! Mā te wahine ka mate!” prints and the stories of Hineahuone, Hinetītama and Hinenuitepō. Tāne Mahuta plays a key role is the stories of all 3 wahine. It was his hands that moulded the form of Hineahuone from the soils of Kurawaka. It was from his nostrils that he breathed the first breath of life into her lifeless form - “Tihei Mauri Ora!”. It was from his loins that he procreated with Hineahuone to form Hinetītama, and subsequently with Hinetītama to create all of humankind. It was the news of his incest that drove Hinetītama to transform herself into Hinenuitepō and take residence in Rarohenga where she greets us, her uri, upon death. These lines and patterns represent the far reaching influence that Tāne has had in giving us life and also ultimately our death. The green colour scheme on white represents leaves and vines of his domain - our ngahere.
