The colours and design of this piece was inspired by the reflection of the moon on the ripples of the ocean surface.
The pūhoro pattern is said to have been carved into the base of waka to streamline and enhance its movement through the water. It is associated with the ocean tides and currents which are influenced by the push and pull of te marama.
