600mm mixed media on pine

By Julia Kihi-Coates

Inspired by the Akatea, or the white Rātā vine. These beautiful vines have fine clasping roots which cling to trees as they climb toward the forest canopy. Leaves are dark green above and pale green below, with white fluffy flowers.

The pūhoro design, often associated with voyaging waka and the ocean currents, also mimics the look and feel of this climbing vine as it moves and swerves its way up the rākau.
